Canadian GP - Practice One Results

Results: Hulkenberg 6th (1:15.986), di Resta 11th (1:16.460), Karthikeyan 22nd (1:19.354).

Well, that certainly was an interesting session!

The Sahara Force India boys were working on cooling for the engine and breaks. They were also doing some aerodynamic work and this was shown at the start of the session when Paul di Resta came out of the garage with his car covered in flo-viz paint (which helps the engineers see how air is flowing across the surface of the car) - when i say covered, i mean covered - it was everywhere; front wing, sidepods, even on the tyres! Never seen a car with so much flo-viz paint on it!

Anyway, in terms of laptime it was a very promising session for the Indian contingent. Nico Hulkenberg was up in 6th place, just 0.4s behind session leader Hamilton. Infact that lap could have been better, his middle sector was two tenths slower than his best middle sector of the session and so he could have been only 0.2s from the lead! Paul finished in 11th place, just over 0.4s slower than Hulkenberg; that difference is because Paul did not run the faster super-soft tyres.

Of course we don't know the fuel loads yet, but i think that's the most promising FP1 session Force India have ever had and so it's encouraging heading into FP2!

It wasn't just promising for Sahara Force India though, let's not forget about Narain Karthikeyan. As part of my weekend preview article i said that his sole aim this weekend will be to beat teammate de la Rosa. Well actually HRT seem to have taken a big step forward this weekend based on that session. Narain finished 22nd, a huge 1.1s down on de la Rosa - that's a big distance, perhaps he has some problem. Crucially though he was 0.7s and 0.8s up on the two Marussia's of Glock and Pic respectively. Have HRT moved ahead of Marussia on pace? We'll see as the weekend unfolds!
